Science

At Langley Moor Primary School, our science curriculum is knowledge-rich, and enquiry-driven. Rooted in the National Curriculum, science is taught from Reception to Year 6 through carefully sequenced units that build pupils’ understanding of biology, chemistry, and physics over time.

We aim to spark curiosity and wonder about the world, helping children develop a deep understanding of living things, materials, and physical processes. Through engaging investigations, children learn how to ask questions, test ideas, and draw evidence-based conclusions—skills that prepare them to think critically and scientifically in everyday life.

Hands-on learning is central to our approach. Practical experiments, outdoor learning, and trips to nature reserves and the beach bring science to life and make learning meaningful and memorable. Special events, such as Science Week, further enrich the curriculum and highlight the relevance of science in our world today.

Our teaching model promotes progression in both scientific knowledge and enquiry skills. Every lesson is structured to revisit prior learning, introduce new concepts in context, and provide opportunities for investigation and reflection. Children are taught to plan fair tests, record data in various formats, and use accurate scientific vocabulary to explain their findings confidently.

Inclusion is at the heart of our practice. We ensure all learners can access and enjoy science through adaptive teaching, visual aids, collaborative tasks, and digital platforms like Tapestry and Seesaw. From Reception’s digital observations to individual Science Books from Year 2 onwards, children’s work is carefully documented to celebrate progress and guide future learning.

Assessment in science is ongoing and purposeful, focusing on children’s conceptual understanding, enquiry skills, use of vocabulary, and ability to apply their learning. Teachers use this information to identify next steps and ensure that all pupils are supported and challenged appropriately.

Through our engaging and inclusive approach, we aim to develop confident, curious learners who see themselves as scientists—ready to question, explore, and understand the world around them.
